Kalaw is a hill town in the Shan State of Burma. It is located in Kalaw Township in Taunggyi District. Kalaw was founded as a hill station by British civil servants who wanted to escape the heat of the plains. The hill station is located at an elevation of 1320 metres, 50 km from the Inle lake.
The hill station can well serve as a high-altitude holiday resort: the air is cool, the atmosphere is calm, the streets are leafy and green, and the surrounding hills are the only place in Myanmar where travelers can hike overnight without prior permission.
The town was popular with the British during colonial rule. Kalaw is the main setting of the novel "The Art of Hearing Heartbeats" by Jan-Philipp Sendker.
